With a strong emphasis on designing for dementia, Llys y Seren is the first of four new-build care homes for Grwp Gwalia in the Neath–Port Talbot area. Completed in 2014 and designed to the progressive standards recommended by the University of Stirling’s Dementia Services Development Centre, the home provides a high quality care environment for 60 residents.
The approach of ‘domestic’ over ‘institutional’ manifests itself in the scale, appearance and layout of the care home with six independent clusters of ten bedrooms arranged around individual courtyard gardens. Natural light, generosity of space and calming environments are key design concepts behind the scheme which also fosters strong connections to its many gardens and the outside world more generally.
