Situated at Pontmorlais Circus, at the top end of Merthyr Tydfil’s High Street, the landmark building – saved and restored – is now home to a community-run café offering a selection of coffees, cakes and sandwiches, freshly prepared and served by young people from the community of Merthyr. Supported by Merthyr HA, Llamau, a South Wales based homeless charity, regenerated the former Flooks Jewellers in Merthyr Tydfil, returning the iconic building to full use for the benefit of the whole community.
This sensitive £500K refurbishment, conversion and extension of the Grade II listed Victorian building provides the community with a day centre and cybercafé to be run as a social enterprise by homeless young people, giving them the opportunity to gain experience, self-confidence and motivation with temporary accommodation located above the café.
Completed in summer 2012, the project has contributed to the regeneration of the town centre, and improved relationships between the community and disadvantaged young people. This well received facility has also won its heat of the ITV Jubilee Peoples Millions.
