Designed for United Welsh and with a contract value of £6.5 million, Llys Nant y Mynydd Extra Care Housing is a community of 44 self-contained apartments and communal facilities, designed to foster independence for older people at the heart of the village of Nantyglo. Extensive consultation throughout the design process resulted in a high quality building of real value for residents and local people alike.
Located at approximately 330 metres above sea level, this exposed site enjoys magnificent views across the valley and generates the concept of a ‘wrapped’ courtyard that balances shelter for the elderly residents with a sunny aspect. All apartments and generous communal spaces are oriented towards the sun; with the building height kept low on the southern side to maximise solar penetration and views down the valley. Four flats for younger people with physical disabilities and wheelchair users introduce an element of inter-generational living to a scheme that was shortlisted for the Constructing Excellence in Wales: ‘Project of the Year 2012’ award.
