With a strong emphasis on designing for dementia, Plas Bryn Rhosyn is a new care home for Grwp Gwalia in Neath, South Wales. Completed in 2015 and designed to the progressive standards recommended by the University of Stirling’s Dementia Services Development Centre, the home provides a high quality care environment for 60 residents.
The approach of ‘domestic’ over ‘institutional’ manifests itself in the scale, appearance and layout of the care home with five independent clusters of twelve bedrooms arranged around individual courtyard gardens. Daylight, gardens and access to external spaces for all residents are key principles behind the scheme’s architecture of caring and possibilities, where a clear hierarchy of spaces allows for the benefits of community with the privacy of home.
