Priory Street Older Persons Housing
The Priory Street project for WWHA will bring 48 new flats for older residents to Carmarthen. The development adheres to both HAPPI Principles and WDQR standards, creating a future-proof, community-focused living environment.
Located at the edge of the conservation area, the project comprises of four interconnected blocks. The dwellings are fully compliant with WHQS and Lifetime Homes standards, ensuring accessibility and long-term viability. A key feature is the large central courtyard garden, designed to encourage casual interactions among residents, and to foster a sense of community.
Pentan Architects worked closely with WWHA to develop the scheme in line with the HAPPI Principles, enhancing key elements for maximum impact. The flats are designed with a focus on natural light, using dual-aspect layouts and large windows to create bright, open spaces that cater to the needs of older residents. Open plan living further enhances daylight access throughout the apartments.
The building’s design promotes social connectivity with open deck access, allowing residents to interact across different floors and engage with the communal garden below. The wide, sheltered decks also serve as outdoor seating areas, providing easy access to the outdoors.
Energy efficiency and reducing fuel poverty were critical considerations, with Pentan working to achieve SAP A ratings while ensuring long-term affordability for residents. Through thoughtful design iterations and consultations, the team balanced aesthetics with functionality, creating homes that are both visually appealing and practical for older people.
Scheduled to begin construction in Autumn 2024, this project reflects Pentan’s commitment to designing sustainable, inclusive spaces that meet the evolving needs of communities.
