St Teilo’s Low Carbon Housing
Pentan Architects are working with Cardiff Council to bring forward proposals for a ground-breaking low-carbon housing development in Llanederyn. The project was recently declared the Residential Project of the Year at the Cardiff Property Awards 2024, and subsequently the best project of the awards ceremony. This will be a highly sustainable development, combining excellent fabric performance with cutting edge energy technology to reduce its impact on the planet. Homes will be affordable, spacious, and practical for modern family life and set within a healthy, attractive, and safe neighbourhood which embraces placemaking as its central ethos. There will be ample opportunities for walking and cycling whilst the green landscape will protect and integrate wildlife across a project which is inspired by its context and is recognisably ‘Maelfa’.
Comprising 53 new energy-efficient homes, predominantly featuring 2, 3, and 5 bedrooms, this development addresses the housing needs of individuals on the Council house waiting list. The scheme will also include a small development for adults with learning difficulties. This will be staffed 24 hours a day to help residents live independently.
Our project sets a benchmark for sustainability, striving to achieve energy-efficient, low-carbon homes by minimising greenhouse gas emissions. Taking a holistic approach, we consider both embodied carbon (emissions throughout a building’s life cycle, from construction to demolition) and operational carbon (emissions during day-to-day building use) to reduce CO2 released into the atmosphere.
With a goal to attain Passivhaus Plus accreditation, our ambitious project integrates energy generation, low consumption, and high-performance fabric-first construction techniques. The use of a double timber stud modern method of construction ensures a superior building fabric, reflecting our commitment to pushing the boundaries of sustainable architecture.
