Almonry Close Housing
The proposed later living development located on the Almonry Close site in centre of Pershore, Worcestershire, is being delivered by Rooftop Housing Group. The site lies just to the west of the scheduled Pershore Abbey and the Grade I listed Abbey Church of Holy Cross with St. Edburgha at the edge of the Pershore Conservation Area.
The development will provide 55 new units of affordable rent and shared ownership accommodation for the over 55s with associated communal spaces, parking, and landscaped gardens. The scheme will consist of 28 1-bedroom and 28 2-bedroom apartments, as well as a ‘Village Hall’ space and several flexible gathering spaces are intended to provide the opportunity for use by the residents and the wider community.
The arrangement of the new built forms has been driven by key factors, such as creating a new pedestrian link from New Road to Abbey Road, framing new views towards the Abbey and generating a grain and density to the development that feels ‘of its place’ with narrow, intimate streets and courtyards. To ensure a proposal of appropriate scale and massing for the surrounding context, the height of the development varies significantly across the site rising up furthest from the boundaries and dropping down to the more sensitive and modest scale neighbours, such as the Almonry.
The approach to the form and massing forms the beginning of the project’s sustainability aspirations. Breaking the massing along the southern boundary and shallow building forms will allow for natural daylighting and ventilation of the new homes.
