Located on Fitzhamon Embankment, this flagship project for the Seren Group, involved the refurbishment and extension of existing, outdated accommodation for the homeless in Cardiff. The existing building comprises 3 elements; a Victorian clergy house and hall, and a later modern extension to the rear, which bounded the site forming a small courtyard in the centre. Whilst not listed, the Victorian elements were of historic importance; and sensitivity was, therefore required in its refurbishment.
The works, which were procured under JCT Constructing Excellence, included the demolition and construction of a new, contemporary extension to the rear of the site and internal reconfiguration works to provide 18no. en-suite bed spaces arranged in a ‘core and cluster’ model, with 3no. self-contained studio apartments with their own en-suite and kitchen. Staff accommodation and a multi-purpose communal area are provided at Ground Floor. This £1.8 million upgrade opened its doors to residents in September 2015.
